| What Business & Corporate Leaders Say About AI:
I think …[AI is] a process that gets you moving up the success spiral rather than down the failure one and has a motivating effect helping achieve self fulfillment rather than getting into doom & gloom syndrome. Rob Treeby, Health, Safety & Environment Manager, BP Amoco I had the privilege of utilizing an AI methodology/approach with a sales and marketing organization involved in a strategic alliance with a major channel partner. In the two+ years since AI had been introduced to and embraced by the group, a significant transformation has occurred. Morale has improved dramatically, relationships have grown tighter, teamwork has significantly improved and--equally compelling--sales and profitability outpaced the rest of both organizations. A holistic 'appreciative approach' has truly become the way of life for this organization. Jim Gustafson, Vice President & General Manager, ELECTRICjob.com Appreciative Inquiry is the philosophy that is allowing us to engage the hearts, minds, and souls of our people--all of our people. Only when we do that will we achieve breakthrough performance. Cindy Frick, Director, Organizational Development & Human Resource Planning, Roadway Express/Yellow Roadway We introduced the concept of Appreciative Inquiry into our 'Breakthrough Leadership at Roadway' curriculum in 2000. Our senior managers have been enthusiastic about using this innovative approach to deal with some of our most pressing issues. It really does get everyone to focus on what's possible through interactive discovery and design sessions. The output has been amazing and provides a great map to desirable outcomes. Jim Staley, President, Roadway Express/Yellow Roadway AI gets much better results than seeking out and solving problems. We concentrate enormous resources on correcting problems…[but] when used continually over a long time, this approach leads to a negative culture…[or to] a slip into a paralyzing sense of hopelessness …Don’t get me wrong. I’m not advocating mindless happy talk. AI is a complex science designed to make things better. We can’t ignore problems--we just need to approach them from the other side. Tom White, President, GTE Telephone Operations (now Verizon) Consultants and Writers Appreciative Inquiry is, in my view, an exciting breakthrough, one that signals a change in the way we think about change… We are looking at something important. AI will be of enduring consequence, an energizing innovation for the field. That’s my prediction. The late Richard Beckhard, a founder of the field of Organization Development, the Organization Development Network, and former Adjunct Professor, Sloan School We have reached the end of problem solving as a mode of inquiry capable of inspiring, mobilizing, and sustaining human system change. The future of Organization Development belongs to methods that affirm, compel, and accelerate anticipatory learning involving larger and larger levels of collectivity. David L. Cooperrider, Case Western Reserve University and co-founder of Appreciative Inquiry Appreciative Inquiry is a powerful new vehicle for setting in motion a wave of positive organization change. It is based on a deceptively simple premise: that organizations grow in the direction of what they repeatedly ask questions about and focus their attention on. The practice of AI is grounded in an intense exploration of unconditional positive questions that can uncover an organization's best practices and innovations, as well as the conditions that allow it to thrive. So, instead of asking, "What are our problems? What hasn't worked?" we might say, "Tell me a story about a time when things were going really well around here. What conditions were present in those moments? What organizational changes would allow more of those conditions to prevail?" This simple shift in perspective constitutes a powerful intervention in its own right that can begin nudging the organization in the direction of the inquiry--and toward radical innovation. Bernard J. Mohr, President, The Synapse Group, Inc. Appreciative Inquiry is currently revolutionizing the field of organizational development. Robert Quinn, Distinguished Professor of Management, University of Michigan Business School Watch out Dilbert. Your view of corporations as hotbeds of meaningless work and chronic alienation may hold center stage for now. But an alternative view that finds the glass half full, not half empty, is gaining followers daily. Eventually it will replace your terminally cynical take on the world… One thing’s for sure. Dilbert’s method — to search for and highlight the most hilariously counterproductive workplace behavior and the times when workers are most dispirited — is neatly reversed through the method of “Appreciative Inquiry”, or "AI.” Eric Raimy, Human Resource Executive It is not possible for me to describe the greatest experience of my 16-year consulting practice doing Appreciative Inquiry (AI) with my client Novo Nordisk in Copenhagen. Suffice it to say that all the published AI case studies about group enthusiasm, contribution and results were exceeded by our actual experiences--it was nothing short of amazing! 50+ international HR practice leaders convened for three days to create a Global HR Strategy linked to their Balanced Business Score Card for 2002. This diverse group then presented their performance goals and metrics to their CEO and other executive team members. Their outcomes, and particularly the AI process that produced them, were received very enthusiastically by top management. Indeed, the CEO regarded the work performed by HR for the People Strategy side of the business as significant as any of the other Balanced Score Card initiatives for 2002. Congratulations goes to all my HR colleagues at Novo Nordisk--well done! S. Brett Savage, Ph.D., Director of Consulting Services, BT.Novations Appreciative Inquiry is the study and exploration of what gives life to human systems when they function at their best. This approach to personal change and organizational change is based on the assumption that questions and dialogue about strengths, successes, values, hopes, and dreams are themselves transformational. In short, Appreciative Inquiry suggests that human organizing and change, at its best, is a relationship process of inquiry, grounded in affirmation and appreciation. Diana Whitney and Amanda Trosten-Bloom, AI Consultants and Authors of The Power of Appreciative Inquiry Educational organizations Appreciative Inquiry provides leaders with a methodology to focus on the positive instead of the negative. Rather than focusing mainly on problems, it elicits solutions. I…hope that community college [and other] leaders realize the potential for this valuable tool. George R. Boggs, Ph.D., President and CEO, American Association of Community Colleges, Washington, D.C. We recently used AI at a variety of meetings, including a Board retreat, a staff retreat, meetings of our AACC Commissions and Council Chairs, and a design team made up of past Board chairs. AI helped us accept all ideas as valid, kept everyone focused, and improved the creative thinking of each of the groups, resulting in inspiring new mission and vision statements for the association. Feedback from the field allowed us to identify AACC's positive core, that is, what the members valued the most. From this feedback, we were able to draft and approve a statement of core values, a vision statement, and six new strategic action areas that will guide the future activities of AACC. Our new mission statement is 'Building a Nation of Learners by Advancing America's Community Colleges.'" George R. Boggs, Ph.D., President and CEO, American Association of Community Colleges, Washington, DC I'm so very grateful to you (Charles Miller and Nancy Stetson) ...for allowing me and my 'comrades' the space to imagine and to plan a different way of being in our world at The Archer School and in our larger lives. You're changing the world for the better, one step at a time. Arlene Hogan, President, The Archer School for Girls, Los Angeles, CA My "personal-best" experience of AI is the turning away from the dark side of complaints and toward the light of celebration and a focus on the future. Pat Pattison, Consultant, British Columbia Institute of Technology, BC, Canada My "personal-best" experience with AI was the contribution I was able to make to the health and vitality of my department. I feel fortunate to work with talented colleagues who cared deeply about teaching and learning. AI allowed me to further professional development and success within the department, which I believe will yield tremendous benefits for students and instructors alike. My department finished its Program Review yesterday. We were commended in several ways for our collaborative, positive, creative, and thoughtful approach to working with students and with one another. Although no one said anything about AI specifically, I am sure that our two activities early in the year set the tone for the entire effort. The validation team's suggestions included numerous ideas about ways in which our department could showcase ourselves and our students. It was glorious! Teresa Ward, Faculty, Butte College, Oroville, CA I see the Appreciative Inquiry process as a valuable and effective way for teachers to develop the personal resources they need to be engaging, creative, responsive, and reflective teachers. This is actually quite subversive given current pressures to simply deliver standardized instruction and document student mastery of it. I will be working with AI in future courses to develop my approach and to harness more of the power of AI. Mimi Coughlin, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Teacher Education, California State University, Sacramento, CA I have used AI in one very very difficult staff situation, where I had to bring two very disparate groups together, one from within, and one from outside, the college. There were years of negative history between them. We have a common contracting agency who was insisting that we work together on a project for them, move from the silo approach, and integrate our efforts. A tall order! But, we used AI as an intervention process. It was a bit flexible, but it has worked. Our agency is pleased, a lot of barriers have come down, and people are actually having fun! Of course, there are still some ongoing issues to work with, but it's moving in the right direction! Donna Acord, Associate Dean of Extended Learning, Clackamas Community College, Oregon City, OR I had an opportunity to use a part of Appreciative Inquiry immediately upon returning to my campus. On Friday, I changed our (e)Valuation to reflect what participants in our Leadership Program wanted more of. The comments were very interesting and we got more information than usual. On Monday, I conducted a cultural competency workshop for a community agency and I used another part of AI instead of what I had prepared. It was very well received. I really like this process!!! M. Yolanda Nolan, Assistant Director for District Staff and Organizational Development, Dallas County Community College District, Dallas, TX At my institution, a few colleagues and I have been actively using the Appreciative Inquiry (AI) model in several ways: in faculty development, in new faculty orientation, in departments, and in our classrooms (including freshman composition, communications courses and nursing courses). Both my colleague …and I see Appreciative Inquiry as having huge potential in post-secondary education. We can use it to develop a new 'grammar' with which to talk about teaching and learning. Simply put, we are hooked on AI. Patrice Gray, Ph.D., Associate Professor of English and Coordinator of Writing Across the Curriculum, Fitchburg State College, Fittsburg, MS Appreciative Inquiry is not the latest feel-good fad; it's a proven methodology that draws upon the past to create a new positive organizational culture. Appreciative Inquiry is the antithesis of problem-solving, appreciating people and processes that have worked and revitalizing the organization by emphasizing its many successes. Tom Gonzales, (Retired) President, Front Range Community College, CO Thank you for the time we shared and for a wonderful workshop. It came at a really opportune time. It brought together a great deal of thoughts and feelings in a very powerful way for me. I have yet to be clear on how I will synthesize this but I believe it will be internalized. The process is already started. I find myself asking if I could have phrased the questions differently in many of my conversations with those I love. I am also very much aware of those external factors that I had allowed to dominate many of my feelings in recent years. The sorting and the sifting have begun. Thanks again and take care. I have been using the basics of the technique starting a couple of years ago as a facilitation tool. So far we have done strategic planning with our Facilities department and several rounds of an internal program called Leading Work Groups where it is offered as another aspect of "problem solving". Before that I started using it with a non-profit board that I am on for the Vancouver Folk Music Festival Society. I was able to work with a fellow board member who teaches the basics of this at Simon Fraser University in the business department…I feel that the benefit is to move from the all-too- comfortable black hat to the more difficult to access yellow and green hat areas. (How's that for mixing my methods, if not metaphors?) I also have a Jester's Cap in my bag of hats--this is to look at the unintended consequences of a plan as the jester did in days of yore. I am trying to embed AI into the feedback cycles of Instructional Skills Workshops (ISW) a bit more, if only by maintaining the focus on the positive and building skills from there. Alice Macpherson, Kwantlen University College, BC, Canada One of the most powerful AI questions focused on identifying “persons of integrity” at Lakeland. Numerous people across the college were identified as such and they were always quickly identified. Lakeland was also identified as having a supportive environment, as being a place of character and a respected organization, and as having a commitment to the greater good. Delta Force’s AI affirmed everything they had hoped for. The results were helpful as a basis for the college's next steps in strategic planning. Perhaps more significantly, however, AI was a galvanizing set of activities that modeled the participatory governance model, and helped to build that model at Lakeland College. Thomas A. Vandermeulen, Counselor and Eileen Doherty, Director of Research and Planning, Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, OH I had my first AI success. I facilitated a discussion between a supervisor and employee who were at opposite ends of the Grand Canyon with no desire to find any middle ground. Through four conversations based on the AI principles, these two are talking and there is a very firm bridge built across the canyon. We meet again in a month to celebrate more of their success. This stuff really does work! Pam Bergeron, Human Resources, Lansing Community College, Lansing, MI Learning about and beginning to practice the concept of focusing on the positive (not the negative) has been a worthwhile and challenging endeavor for the Management Team. As educators we were trained to use our critical thinking skills in the classroom; as managers we have taken those skills and applied them to administration, often trying to "fix" problems and find solutions on an issue-by-issue basis. However, by approaching those same issues from a positive perspective, we are able to shift our energy from a problem-solving perspective to a view of ourselves as doing good work much of the time and naturally wanting to replicate that experience to do more and better work in the future. We share the goal of making a difference to our students, our faculty, our community, our institution. Through a focused inquiry into what it is that we remember about what we are doing right, we can begin to construct a future that we can envision and create together. AI has given us an inspired way to view ourselves and what we have done so that we can repeat those experiences in an habitual way. Now we need more time to apply that learning. We have already set about addressing that objective. Mary Spangler, President, Los Angeles City College, CA My best experience (of the inquiry) was seeing the excitement and commitment of each of the participants and motivation to be involved to work toward a positive end. Now two months later, I continue to see the same enthusiasm and pride in work being accomplished to meet their goals. Deb Parziale, Faculty, Ohlone College, CA …the most exciting aspect of taking an appreciative approach was the amazing level of energy and enthusiasm that emerged early and that was present throughout the day. We were convinced that, had we taken a traditional problem-solving approach, we would have stumbled up against seemingly insurmountable issues related to economics and college structure. Instead, the group left feeling excited and extremely hopeful about the future of collaboration among diverse groups at the college. That energy is seeding ongoing efforts to encourage collaboration during challenging times. Brenda Munro, Extension Services Coordinator; and Lorne Daniel and Glynis Wilson Boultbee, Consultants, Red Deer College, AB, Canada I've been pleasantly surprised to recognize how AI has changed me in subtle and not so subtle ways. I relate differently with my staff and family, and I find myself internally problem-solving with a positive approach much more often than before. I'm also more aware of how warmly small comments of appreciation are received in every social context. It's like we're all starving for affirmation. Carol Hatch, Coordinator, Foster Care & Independent Living Program, San Joaquin Delta College, CA I was amazed at the energy in the room (of 75 people). I have received tremendous feedback from a broad array of attendees, and the impact on the tone here is direct. Where we left the Spring term with a negative, deficit perspective, we've opened this year with a positive, asset perspective. Where to from here? I fully anticipate a totally new organization for this campus based on interdisciplinary units. We have a great deal of work to do, but the start was great. Doug Garrison, Ed.D., Vice President/Executive Dean, Petaluma Campus, Santa Rosa Junior College, CA By stressing what works--not what doesn't, I believe educators can help narrow the deeply disquieting achievement gap between African Americans and white and Asian students. The gap is very real. The National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that a black high school graduate demonstrates learning and skills at an 8th-grade level. That's, on average, four years behind white and Asian students. The complexity and enormity of the problem has left many educators feeling frustrated and hopeless. But it's my experience that Appreciative Inquiry (AI)--which focuses on the positive and what's working--can help students and educators build a bridge over those feelings and ultimately move a school toward positive change…Students from Shaw High School in East Cleveland were trained to conduct Discovery interviews with 100 citizens and community stakeholders from different cultures and generations. The interviews helped debunk negative myths that most students were disrespectful and not interested in learning. Over 150 parents, teachers and stakeholders--individuals who rarely come together at the same time--met at a community summit in 2000 to discuss their Dreams for Shaw. The summit prompted participants to Design a five-week summer institute for students that were having difficulty passing the Ohio Proficiency Test. Nineteen of the 21 students who completed the institute later passed the exam--Destiny. Charleyse S. Pratt, Ph.D., Consultant to Shaw High School, OH I am so pleased to report to you that my first facilitation of an Appreciative Inquiry was a huge success! People at my college went away feeling good and saying great things about the process. I know it was the best day of my career. I loved every minute of it and I wasn't even nervous. We did end up going a different direction than I anticipated but it was OK; everyone was positive and the day yielded great results! Nicole Roades, Southern State Community College, OH Last year we were grappling with the challenge of developing peer review opportunities for our tenure candidates. Among the areas of conversation we hoped to encourage, we asked our new faculty members to explain their professional philosophies to the senior faculty. 'Explain your teaching philosophy' solicited tense, canned responses. Re-phrasing the query to, "Tell us a story from your practice that exemplifies your teaching philosophy" not only garnered exciting responses but set an appreciative tone for the entire review process." Helen M. Clarke, Director, Teaching/Learning Academy & Professor of English, Valencia Community College-East Campus, FL I found the process useful. Lots of great ideas. We now have a shared vision. The future looks really good. Francisco Arce, Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Instruction, San Joaquin Delta College, CA I most appreciated working in a collaborative, positive, high-energy environment. We all care a lot and want to grow and succeed. I plan to focus on what's working and do more of it. Thanks for the opportunity to articulate a shared vision. Sharon Daegling, Instructional Support, San Joaquin Delta College, CA This stuff really works! Kathy Hart, Dean of Planning, Research, and Regional Education, San Joaquin Delta College, CA I most appreciated the positive energy and the opportunity to participate. I also appreciated how well the AI process really works. Sherry Young, Program Manager, San Joaquin Delta College, CA Wow! This (Appreciative Inquiry) really gets you pumped! My faculty are energized and I am more motivated than I have been in a long time. Appreciative Inquiry has completely changed the way I think about faculty development. Kina Mallard, Ph.D., Chair, Communication Arts Department and Director, Center for Faculty Development, Union University, TN Governmental organizations [Before an Appreciative Inquiry Summit held in Monterey, CA]: During this summit, we will use a tool that is new to many of us – appreciative inquiry. Appreciative inquiry is a way to rediscover and tap into our core strengths and highest potentials. It also helps us develop our self-talk in a constructive way and encourages us to bring out our best qualities in serving this institution. Appreciative inquiry is a method that helps us develop the goals and dreams that support the future of our Navy. It involves soliciting ideas from people throughout our fleet. Admiral Vern Clark, US Navy Nonprofit organizations I recently facilitated an Appreciative Inquiry session with a group of Khmer female and cross-gender sex workers in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, as part of an evaluation of an HIV/AIDS prevention and care project. I was quite nervous about it beforehand because I didn't know the Khmer culture; I had to work through a translator, and many of the participants couldn't read or write. But it worked beautifully! In fact, the process took off much faster than I had anticipated and they all had wonderful stories, and often used powerful metaphors, to describe their peak experiences in the project and the amazing HIV/AIDS work they are doing. I asked several Cambodians beforehand if they thought the idea and process would work and they all said yes. We then made the AI questions and instructions as simple and straight forward as possible and, perhaps most importantly, had FAITH in both the process and the participants. Ana Coghlan, Ph.D., Program Planning & Evaluation Consultant, Dhaka, Bangladesh Our generation has arrived at the threshold of a new era in human history: the birth of global community. Modern communications, trade, and international relations as well as the security and environmental dilemmas we all face make us increasingly interdependent. No one can live in isolation. Thus, whether we like it or not, our vast and diverse human family must finally learn to live together. Individually and collectively we must assume a greater sense of universal responsibility…You see, positive things do not come by nature. For positive things we have to make an effort. We must make the effort. Nobody, no one else, can do that. So everyone, hope for a better future, a happier future, if that is our wish. The present generation must make every effort. It is our responsibility. His Holiness, the Dalai Lama I have to say that AI has transformed my life. I'm usually skeptical of the depth and longevity of change, but this process isn't just about change on the macro level. For me, the most amazing thing is the way it changes persons...their thinking and way of being and how they view the world and their work. From my perspective, AI can be thought of as a spiritual practice. Reverend Vicki Hammel, United Church of Christ, Subury, MA
